Week 3 begins at Cal U

The more things stay the same the more they change.  Another week and another set of fresh swimmers ready for another great week of swim camp.  Sunday we spent the evening working on Ready position and Streamlining.  It was a very informative night.  By the end of the session it was very apparent that improvement had been made.

It is so rewarding seeing the look on swimmers faces when they "get it", their smile is so big and genuine.

Monday started with 6:15 practice and was my first in 13 years.  The group enjoyed the challenging 4,500 yard workout.  I stressed how each set had a purpose and in the end it was awesome to watch them get through it.

We had a classroom session on Freestyle and then spent the day and evening working on breaking down Freestyle and everything they needed to do to swim "Smart".  The last pool session was spent on Freestyle starts and turns.

After such a rewarding day it was fitting the we began Cal U Swim Camp Survivor.  Returning and new campers had a blast.

It has been a lot of fun watching new friendships being made.

Good Night from Cal U...I have to be up again at 6:00 a.m.

A Great First Day!!!

Here we are for Week 1 of CAL U Swim Camp.  A great group of swimmers and an excited staff of coaches came together for a very productive first day.

Streamline and Ready position were the focus of the pool session.  I really try to give the swimmers a "True" and "Real" explanation as to what we need them to do and how we want to do things. That way they know exactly what we need them to do and how we want them to do it.  The better the staff can explain things even if it is said a couple of different ways the essence is there.

There were a lot of smiles and a lot of fun in the pool tonight.

The camp came together for an interesting team building exercise to finish off the day.
The group was introduced to Massively Multiplayer thumb wrestling.  A lot of fun for all.

Tomorrow Coach Nikki starts the day with Early Morning practice.

Freestyle will be our focus on Day 2.

Good Night from Cal U.

Week 2 Catch Up...

It has been a crazy week for me.  Starting Week 2 of camp (really my 6th week of swim camps this summer) and Tuesday I had a job interview for the Varsity Girls Swim Coaching position at Penfield.

I thought the first 2 days of camp were great.

I presented Freestyle and we went over all the components of it.  It was a great "chalk talk".  A lot of great questions and comments.

2 pool sessions lead to some great drills and even better improvements in the water.  Streamlining has come a long way.  These swimmers are really working hard.

Then Tuesday I headed back home for my interview.  The interesting thing about working at Penfield is that for 2 years prior to me working there I coached SO many kids that are from the Penfield School District.  This connection has paid off BIG time, the swimmers know me, know my style.  The funniest thing about my second go around in High School swimming is that I picked up for I left off.  My Student-Athletes swim FAST.  I look at this as a great next challenge.  I have so much respect for the Penfield program and everything that has come before me.  The last 2 years have been great and I would love the opportunity to continue the great work that I started 2 years ago with an incredible coach in Paul Buckner.  I will know soon.  Fingers crossed.

Tuesday was a continuation of Freestyle, comparing and contrasting Sprint, Middle Distance, and Distance.

Wednesday was Backstroke Day and a great day at the lake.

Today we are working on Breaststroke.  We have a great team building exercise tonight and more Hartwick Swim Camp Survivor.
